My passion for pronunciation started back at university when I was training to become a French teacher. There was one course that completely fascinated me: phonetic correction, taught by a teacher I’ll never forget : Monsieur Billières.
One unforgettable fact I learned was that even before birth, a baby in the womb hears the intonation of their mother’s language. That means they start absorbing the rhythm of the language before they’re even born! This fascinated me deeply.
I also discovered the concept of the phonological filter — meaning we are born able to produce all the sounds of all languages, but as we grow, we lose this ability and tune in to just the sounds of our native language. This explains why some French sounds can feel so tricky to learners.
1-From technical corrections to a deeper understanding
When I first started teaching French, I only corrected pronunciation occasionally, maybe fixing a sound here or there during speaking activities or when introducing the alphabet. There wasn’t a clear goal or personalized diagnosis.
But today, my approach is very different. I work based on each learner’s desires and motivations. Pronunciation work becomes a deeply personalized journey.
2-Pronunciation transforms confidence and clarity
Working on pronunciation helps clear up confusion caused by the big difference between spoken and written French. Many learners start writing words as they sound, which helps them better understand and validate the sounds they hear.
Pronunciation work improves listening comprehension, fluency, and reading speed. Most importantly, it builds self-confidence and reduces doubt when speaking.
3-What happens in a pronunciation coaching session?
In sessions, we explore what makes French rhythm unique: the grouping of words, melody, and intonation. We repeat phrases, play with emotions, and discover how pronunciation changes meaning.
We focus on producing French sounds clearly and avoiding confusion, but also on linking words smoothly through liaisons and rhythm.
Each person chooses how they want to work: some enjoy a playful approach, others prefer theory, practical exercises, everyday conversations, or reading classic French texts. The learning path is customized to fit their personality and goals.
